Visualizing Energy: A RFP for Intervention
Posted by: (212) 505-6050, kennedy@solar1.org
Deadline: May 15, 2008
Solar One, located along the East River in Manhattan, is NYC's first solar powered arts and education center bringing dance, film, art and project-based installation to students and citizens of New York since 2003. Our education initiative is making a shift in how we approach experiential learning, steering away from the usual methodologies of environmental education and instead building a pedagogy of aesthetics, ecology and participation. For one of our first projects we are inviting artists and designers everywhere to help us with a project entitled: Visualizing Energy: A RFP for Intervention.

Artists and designers are asked to answer questions such as: How does energy feel? How can one explain energy, its effects and processes through sculpture, performance, painting, multi-media or any mixed-use method? How does the sun work? What is wind energy? Where does energy come from? Does energy have a soul? Our audience is K-12 students in and around the NYC metropolitan area and beyond. We want to be able to provide students with an imaginative and innovative aesthetic of renewable energy, the possibilities for urban environments and to indeed make energy something tangible and readily accessible through aesthetic intervention. Solar One is thus accepting proposals for energy related installations, projects or performances that help to bring the issue of renewable energy to a vernacular understanding for youth everywhere.
